Soviet Jewry 25

bThat was the answer given to the United Press and it was bsoon flashed all over the world. The next day we began our befforts to convince the Russians that we meant exactly bthat—that two Russians Would be killed for every Soviet Jew bwho was murdered. For weeks we had planned another bhundred-hour vigil outside the Soviet Mission and we now bbegan it earlier than planned by again taking over the Park bEast Synagogue. There the occupiers shouted again and bagain, “Russian blood will flow all over the world if one drop bof Jewish blood is shed.” Police reinforcements were called bin to surround the mission and to block off the street at both bends. The mission itself was like a building under siege, with bevery blind drawn and every resident of the block forced to bshow his identification.

bThe vigil began at 8:30 PM on Sunday, December 27. As I bleft the synagogue where I had been all day and entered the bHunter College auditorium a block away, I found a hall bpacked with humanity waving banners and flags. Electricity bwas in the air. The press, television, and radio corps filled bthe front near the platform, and to each question I repeated bthe answer again and again: “Two Russians for every Jew.” bThe slogan spread through the hall and even before the bspeeches began, the huge audience shook the hall with brepeated chants of “Two Russians for every Jew!”

bThe speaker who introduced me was JDL vice-chairman bBert Zweibon and as I rose to speak a thunderous roar bgreeted me. I looked out at the packed mass of humanity, at bthe young, angry Jews and the no longer apathetic adults band saw the success of JDL in a short two years. I quote from bthe headline story in the New York News:

b“Speaking in a staccato style which electrified the audi- bence, Kahane charged that ‘three million Jews in Soviet bRussia are being ripped from us now. And it is our obliga- btion to break any and every law now to save them!’

b“‘We Jews have a hang-up. It’s known as respectability. bWhen President Roosevelt told us we could not bomb the brailroads leading to Auschwitz, we were respectable. And six bmillion Jews died. It’s time to bury respectability before it bburies us!’
