Stokely Was Here Sunday

bAlthough unable to make Friday’s speaking engage- bment at Great Neck North High School, Stokely Car- bmichael, former head of SNCC, did appear Sunday at the bhome of Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Lichtenstein, 144 Kings bPoint Rd., under the sponsorship of the Great Neck bCommittee for Human Rights.

bHere [picture] he is shown addressing crowd in the bLichtenstein living room. Standing alongside him is Moe bTendler, counsel to CORE. This was a fund raising event. bAdmission was $5 per person. It was announced that the bLichtensteins gave $5,000, their children gave $25 and bthe Great Neck Forum donated $1,000. . . .

bI feel compelled, too, to add a footnote. Next to the barticle, in my files, appears another one, from The New bYork Times of August 27, 1967, under the heading “Car- bmichael Offers to Fight for Arabs.” It reads, in part: “De- bnouncing both the United States and Israel, Carmichael said bhe and other Negro militants were ready to take up arms, if bnecessary, to help the Arabs free Palestine.”

bOne wonders whatever happened to Moe of CORE or bSeymour of Great Neck—or their children. . . .

bAnd while the Jew died of spiritual malnutrition and bnational amnesia, yet another horror reared its ugly head at bhim from another, more prosaic direction. Ugly, open, and bunabashed anti-Semitism began to manifest itself and for bthe Jewish Establishment and liberals it came from a totally bunexpected and decidedly ungrateful source. The Negro— bnow insisting upon being called Black—community turned bon its “noble and generous benefactors” with a hatred and brage that horrified all the Jews, who pointed uncompre- bhendingly at all the Great Neck benefits, at all the Rosen- bwald money and efforts for Negro schools, at all the Jewish bpresidents of the NAACP. This apparently made little im- bpact upon the Jew-hatred, and may even have aggravated it.
