bConcord Hotel, passed a resolution advocating preferential
btreatment for Black applicants for new jobs in civil service as
bopposed to Jewish applicants. When the President of the
bJewish Teachers Association, the late Dr. Herman Mantell,
bdemanded clarification, it was given to him on June 24,
b1968, by Morris S. Sass, New York Regional Director of the
bB’nai B’rith’s Anti-Defamation League. According to Man-
btell, Sass stated that the ADL position was that if Jewish and
bBlack applicants of equal preparation seek the same civil
bservice job, then the preference should be given to the Black
bapplicant.
bADL chairman Dore Schary at the B’nai B’rith’s triennial
bconvention at Washington’s posh Shoreham Hotel on Sep-
btember 8, 1968, warned “not to exaggerate fears of Black
bNegro anti-Semitism.” “Let us be crystal clear,” he said, “the
bstatements of a few must not be attributed to an entire

bconfident that the views do not represent any significant
bnumber of Harlem residents but only a tiny and discredited
bfringe group.” The leaflet had been produced by Jesse
bGray, who the following year won the Democratic nomina-
btion for City Councilman from Harlem . . .
bIt was typical of the mentality of the Jews who ran the
bJewish community. And they never really learned. When a
blarge and expensive advertisement by tens of militant
bBlacks, including professionals, ministers, and political ac-
