And when leading bReform Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath, quoted so favorably by bthe Times, declared that he saw merit in Forman’s de- bmands (Eisendrath continued to favor Jewish reparations buntil the end), our position was that it might very well be bthat Eisendrath had had Baptist slave-owners for ances- btors, but, as I told the press, “Most Jews came here in bgalleys long after the Blacks were freed. Blacks deserve bnothing from us and that is what they will get.” I added, b“If anyone is talking about reparations and if anyone bdeserves it, we Jews are first in line.” The shadow of the bCrusades, the Inquisitions, and both the Catholic and bMartin Luther’s massacres of Jews were difficult memories bto erase.

bWe had no intention of asking for reparations and even bless of giving them to an extortionist who was of that bschool of militants that preyed on the guilt feelings of the bwhite gentile and on his cowardly reparations to pay him boff so as not to “cause trouble.” If churches wanted to bpay, we pitied the poor congregants who were burdened bwith such “leaders,” but that was their affair.
