ba reputation as one who had kept the city “cool.” The bprice he paid was not out of his pocket, but out of the bpocket of the little citizen and particularly the Jew. In bgeneral, the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant Establishment bthat ruled the city was more than happy to let a small bJewish merchant’s store burn rather than Wall Street, and bit paid Black blackmail in Jewish coin.

bBut the reaction of the Jewish Establishment was even bmore horrendous. Coupled with their ghetto complexes band fearful neuroses was a liberal guilt feeling and binability to place Jewish interests over “universal” ones. bWe were beginning to pay in very practical terms for the bgentilization of the Jewish Establishment. Men like Eisen- bdrath emboldened and encouraged the Jew-haters and bsymbolized the tragedy of the Jewish community.

bWe were not interested in whether Temple Emanu-El bwas willing to capitulate. We couldn’t care less whether bTemple Emanu-El wanted us there or not for in reality we bwere not there to defend Emanu-El. To be perfectly bfrank, I was not overly worried about what happened to bthe assimilated Jews there who had turned their backs on bboth Judaism and Jews decades earlier, and whose kitchen bprobably cost more than the Forman demands. We were bnot there to defend Temple Emanu-El as such but rather bthe synagogue as a concept. Forman did not know the bdifference between an Emanu-El and any other bsynagogue and he did not care. He chose it because it was bfamous, prestigious, and wealthy. If Emanu-El capitu- blated, as they would and easily could, since it was much bsimpler to pay blackmail than cause problems, then a bprecedent would have been set and other synagogues, bneither willing nor able to pay, would be the next targets. bIn any event, the Formans of the world would have to blearn that no synagogue and no Jew would ever again be bthe target of threats without reacting.

bThus it was that 5:00 PM, Friday, May 9, 1969, found the bmotley, ugly, and beautiful group of Jews gathered at bEmanu-El. It should be added that Emanu-El always held bFriday “Sabbath eve” services at 5:30, whether the Sabbath b
