Negro anti- bSemitism presents none of the dangers of fascism.” Mr. bSchary then went on to condemn the city of Chicago for its b“overkill” during the street violence at the Democratic Na- btional Convention. An ADL official named Schultz warned bagainst Jewish “extremists” in the schools. Mr. Albert Vor- bspan, director of the Reform Jewish movement’s Commis- bsion on Social Action, decried “inflammatory” reactions by bJews that were bringing us “to the very brink of hysteria.” A bgroup calling itself the Council of Jews for Racial Justice bcondemned the “anti-Semitic scare” and quoted approv- bingly from an article by one Michael Scott who said that he bwas born in Germany (one can wager, not with the name b“Scott”) and was rescued by Youth Aliyah. He then bexplained away the anti-Semitism by saying that Blacks are bbeing pushed to the wall, equated it with the Jewish under- bground groups in Palestine and then asked “why do we bdemand that Black people be so much purer than we?” bJason Epstein, intellectual and Jewish self-hater in residence bat the New York Review of Books, viciously attacked a book on bthe strike that had dared presume that there was anti- bSemitism. Finally, The New Republic, liberal to the end, car- bried an article by Joseph Featherstone titled “Inflating the bThreat of Black anti-Semitism.”

bAll this tolerance took place against a background of bthreats to carry Jews out of schools in pine boxes, vicious banti-Jewish leaflets stuffed in Jewish teachers’ mailboxes, an bAfro-American Society Black Week program at CCNY bwhich saw an “Oppressed People’s Theater” put on a per- bformance that carried among others, the deathless line “Hit- bler didn’t burn enough Jews,” and much more.
