Violence 113

bAt Brooklyn’s Thomas Jefferson High School, a Malcolm bX memorial program featured a poem that spoke of “white bpigs.” Jewish teachers marched out in anger and fear as the bnewly appointed Black principal insisted that he could do bnothing. At Eastern District High School in the Wil- bliamsburg section of Brooklyn, once a magnificent school bwhence had come forth thousands of immigrant Jews to bbecome successful parts of the American whole, a riot broke bout in early March as two hundred rampaging students bwrecked the school, smashed the offices of Dean Dideon bGoldberg, and demanded that the man who had served in bthat position for more than twenty years be dismissed. bObscene, violent literature against Goldberg was distrib- buted. Stewart had tried to settle the bproblem in the usual Board of Education way, by telling bGoldberg to report to the main office of the board, where he b
