bWe needed no one to tell us what was the proper way for a bJew to behave.

bIn the summer of 1969 the Philadelphia Board of Rabbis bissued “guidelines” on how to behave if militants attempted bto take over a synagogue. The pitiful “spiritual leaders” badvised no violence and to allow the hoodlums to have their bsay. My personal reaction was to write the following in my bweekly column in the Jewish Press:

James Forman has just finished addressing the bcongregation after striding in with ten machete-carrying baides and demanding to speak before the services have con- bcluded. In conjunction with the guidelines issued by the bBoard of Rabbis and the Community Relations Council, bRabbi Merton Horace Eisenkopp graciously allowed For- bman to take the pulpit, where upon he proceeded to attack all bthe “pigs” and “bloodsuckers” of the temple and finished bwith a demand for $200,000 to be paid in cash. The bdirectors have just finished congratulating Mr. Forman and bare walking into the room led by the chairman, J. B. Cole- bman.)

bBOARD MEMBER A:aWow, was that a speech! That guy has bto have gall to come in here and insult us like that.

bBOARD MEMBER B:aI’m still not sure that we should have blet him take over the pulpit.

bA:aWhat would you prefer a fight in the synagogue?

bB:aWell, maybe that’s the way . . .

bCOLEMAN:aGentlemen, gentlemen, let’s knock it off. bWe’ve got important business to talk about and I want to bdeal with it before the rabbi comes in. He’s busy exchang- bing theological views with Forman now so let’s hurry.

bA:aYou’re right, J.B.; we’ve got to decide what to do babout this demand.
