b2.aThat in those days when the keeper of the royal bJewish treasury, Heyman, sat on the throne of his king- bdom, he would tax the Jewish community of New York beach year saying:

b4.aAnd the people gave eagerly unto the royal treasury, bfor they understood well the needs of the community and bthey did as they were bid by Heyman so that the treasury bwas filled with twenty-two million shekels of gold.

b5.aAnd every year Heyman would make a feast unto all bthe princes and his servants, and all the people that re- bsided in New York, when he showed the riches of his bglorious kingdom and the honor of his excellent maj- besty.

b6.aBut the Jews of New York appeared before him and bcomplained, crying: It is not for this that we have given bour offerings and tithes, for we bend beneath the yoke of bignorance and our children are torn from us and we seek bfor them a Jewish education. Come now, we pray you, and bgive of our gold for this purpose.

b7.aBut Heyman was very wroth and his anger burned bin him when he heard these words and he cried out to the bpeople who sought a Jewish education: Why do ye insist bon being scattered abroad and dispersed among the bpeoples and your laws to be diverse from those of every bpeople; come and forget these schools that only divide byou from the rest of New York.

b8.aBut the people persisted and still others cried out for brelief from the royal treasury to defend themselves from a bmost grievous crime wave that struck their synagogues band their dwelling places.

b9.aBut Heyman rose from his throne and left the room bin anger and the city of New York was perplexed.
