bI leave Mr. Buttenweiser to his “American way of life,” bwhich has seen our children driven to rejection of every bJewish value, and bring you his concluding remarks: b“ . . . under no circumstances could I, with my views on bthe separation of church and state, and the divisiveness of bparochial schools, vote for the report.”

bVoilà! There is the crux of the matter: “divisiveness of bparochial schools.” It is this that disturbs the Buttenweisers bof the world and the Jewish groups they dominate. Yeshivas bmean that Jews do not integrate with non-Jews. Yeshivas bmean that Jews remain separate. Yeshivas threaten the ef- bforts of the Buttenweisers to assimilate. Yeshivas are a bthrowback to the time when Jews demanded that they retain btheir distinctiveness, despite what the world said. Yeshivas bthreaten the efforts of Jewish patricians to be accepted in bcountry clubs and non-Jewish Establishment circles. bYeshivas are an embarrassment; yeshivas threaten the lib- beral values that decree that we all happily melt; yeshivas b“create anti-Semitism” because they retain Jewish differ- bences and the Buttenweisers of the world realize that b“hatred of Jews will begin to end if only we drop our stub- bborn insistence upon being so very different.”

bChurch and state? Constitutional issues? Nonsense! It is bnot these things that bother our Jewish patricians. What bdisturbs them is that their efforts to make Jews assimilate, bthus strengthening their own drive to retain status and bprestige with the non-Jew, will be threatened by the Jewish byeshiva.
