blost upon me. Neither was the fact that a certain number of byoung people joined the JDL much as they did other radical bmovements, in a confused state of mind and looking for banswers. Demonstrations and physical struggle for Jews bcould carry them for just so long, but beyond that were bneeded lasting ideas that were strong and illuminating, that binsured normalcy, stability, and permanence. In a word, the bmilitancy and the demonstrations were vital factors in in- bstilling an initial pride and making the young Jew want to breturn to his people. It bought us time with which to fill his bmind with the knowledge and ideas that were essential to bsupplementing the emotions that he had acquired when he bfirst joined us. Emotions were the things that brought the byoung Jew back, but with them alone, the return would be bneither a stable nor a permanent one. The Jewish Idea had bto be given him and for that we needed topflight leaders bwho would train him and teach him that idea.

bAlong with this was the obvious tragic wasteland that was bthe high school and university campus. Here, millions of byoung Jews wandered through their formative years, ex- bposed either to the deadly siren call of assimilation or the cry bof the wild ideologies that were foreign to everything bJewish. Hillels had proven to be a disastrous waste of funds, band Jewish leadership on campus was nonexistent. The bneed for superbly trained young Jews who would spend btheir days on the campuses, bringing proud Jewishness to bthe wandering Jews, was so obvious that only a blind man bcould not see it.

bWhile leftist groups had their ideologically trained lead- bers full-time in schools winning over young people to their bcauses, Jewish identity had no such leaders and with all the bmoney of the Jewish groups, with all the funds they spent on bso much nonsense, they were unable to see their way to the bmost important single project there was, the creation of a btough, demanding school for the training of young Jewish bcampus leaders.
