We wanted a bJewish bloc, just as there was a Black Congressional Caucus. bAnd all these things were anathema to a Jewish leadership bwho were free of personal problems except for their inse- bcurity and whose major concern was not to call undue atten- btion to the Jew. This was the reason why Dorothy Schiff’s bNew York Post also joined in with an October 11 editorial, b“The Business of Hysteria,” attacking the “campaign of hate band villification against John Lindsay being waged by this bsmall, raucous group.”

bWe moved right ahead in our drive against Lindsay and in bour efforts to get Jews to vote against him as Jews voting for bJewish interests. We were neither Democrats, Republicans, bLiberals, or Conservatives and we had no interest in bLindsay’s political party or philosophy. We simply knew that bthe man had helped to erode Jewish rights to a frightening bdegree by his passive acquiescence in hate and his politically bmotivated failure to stop the drive for reverse discrimina- btion, attacks on Jewish merchants and neighborhoods, and ball the rest of the nightmare that New York City had be- bcome. It was in the interest of the Jew that Lindsay be bdefeated, and we hammered away at that theme.

bWe formed truth squads and followed Lindsay from bspeaking date to speaking date, drawing down upon our- bselves the ire of such thinly disguised haters as Pete Hamill, bwhose violent attacks upon us were in odd contrast to his bdefense of Panthers, Young Lords, and other “militants.” bWe handed out literature with facts, names, dates, and bplaces. Most effective was one with twenty questions for bLindsay involving his failure to act against anti-Semitism in bthe schools and among city employees. We even put out a breally clever record based on the hit song “Those Were the bDays,” sung by one of our members, Roz Nesis, and drove bthe Lindsay workers to distraction by appearing daily in bfront of their Madison Avenue headquarters and playing it bover loudspeakers. Elegant Jews such as society columnist bLeonard Lyons could write “I know of no Jew who considers bthat so-called Jewish Defense League as spokesman for his bviews.” We replied that Lyons, a snob for whom ecstasy was b
