b11:00 PM with food—I and the other JDL people, including bIrv Calderon, Chaim Bieber, Eileen Garfinkel, Stuart Cohen, bAlex Sternberg, and two others, were brought to the court- bhouse, where bail of $25,000 for me and $10,000 for each bof the other defendants was set. There was not a chance in bthe world of getting that kind of security, since no Jewish bgroup had ever in the past or ever would in the future put bup that kind of money for Jewish political prisoners. It was bColombo who appeared in court and arranged for the bail, bwhile at the same time giving us the free services of one of bhis own personal attorneys, Barry Slotnick.

bFollowing our release, a gigantic kind of press conference bwas held and the story, with pictures of myself and Colombo bshaking hands, was splashed over the front pages of news- bpapers, including The New York Times. The latter, which bnever had seemed to mind similar photos of American bdiplomats smiling at international Mafioso types such as bLeonid Brezhnev and Chou En-Lai, erupted with fury in an beditorial, “Colombo-Kahane,” scornfully concluding:

b“In his worry about his own future, it seems not to bother bRabbi Kahane that by making such an unsavory alliance he bhas only provided additional reason for public revulsion bagainst his already discredited organization of strong-arm bextremists.”

bSince The New York Times attitudes held less than no binterest for me, we blithely went ahead forging ties with the bCivil Rights League, including agreeing to Colombo’s invita- btion to participate in a rather bizarre golf tournament for bcharity to be held at the Eastchester Country Club— bColombo was a good golfer, and I told him that the next btime I would invite him to a stickball tournament. At our bconvention at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in June b1971, I told the three hundred delegates:

b“My ‘alliance’ is not with Joe Colombo but with the tens of bthousands and hundreds of thousands of Italian- bAmericans. I will march with anyone if I think I can help a bJew.
