b“‘If you don’t want anything,’ exclaimed the rebbe, ‘why bdo you keep taking out money and giving it to me?’

b“‘I will tell you,’ replied the Lithuanian. ‘I simply wanted bto sit here and watch as someone does nothing and takes bmoney for it . . .’

b“I have sat for years,” I told the audience, “watching the bNew York Board of Rabbis do nothing and take money for bit.”

bIt was not funny. They, a puppet group set up by the bEstablishment to be the “religious” spokesman for New bYork Jewry, dutifully issued their press releases, which were bjust as dutifully copied by The New York Times on the eve of bPurim, Passover, etc. On cue; they condemned Nazis, bArabs, and anti-Semitism. They also represented Jews at binterfaith ceremonies, at prayers that opened sessions of blegislatures, and at invocations of UJA dinners featuring ba bored Moshe Dayan. That is what they did.

bWhat they were supposed to do was quite another matter. bOne of their main functions, in theory, was to serve as bchaplains at hospitals and prisons. Concerning the former, bthere are many Jews who know of the constant presence of a bpriest asking if there is something he can do for the patient. bRare is the Jewish invalid who ever sees a Jewish chaplain, balthough the latter is supposed to be there, gets paid for it, band is a representative of the Board of Rabbis, to whom is bentrusted this noble work. But even fewer Jews have an bopportunity to learn of the disgraceful negligence and in- bvisibility of the Board of Rabbis chaplains in prisons.

bAvraham Herschkowitz was one Jew who did. An active bmember of the JDL, he and his young wife Nancy, nineteen, bwere arrested in September 1970 at Kennedy Airport as bthey were about to board a London-bound airliner. On their bpersons were found loaded guns and a live grenade.
