bWe at JDL were not surprised by this or by a major article bon JDL in New York Magazine, in which author Mel Ziegler bdescribed a visit to the ADL and wrote: “I came away from bthe Anti-Defamation League feeling that it does indeed bknow a lot about defamation.”

bIt was not the first time that ADL, a particularly obnox- bious group, had attempted to get Jews thrown into jail. In a bmemorandum on “The Jewish Defense League, Inc.” dated bSeptember 12, 1969, and marked “Confidential,” the ADL blists several possible ways that the JDL and its leaders might bbe accused of violating the law and suggests looking into the bmatter with law-enforcement agencies. The memo begins:

b“This memorandum is based on material made available bto me by Jerry Bakst and examines the various possibilities bof action by law-enforcement authorities against improper bactivities of the said organization.”

bIt then lists the “possibilities,” indicating meticulous and bexpensive effort on the part of the group whose members bpay it to fight the enemies of the Jewish people. The writer bof the memo, whose initials at the end are listed as “SR,” bstates that it appears that the JDL has no legal right to run a bcamp and concludes that “the Attorney General might well bbe in a position to institute quo warranto proceedings bagainst the JDL.” Next comes the suggestion that JDL might bcome under Section 7206 of Title 26 of the US Internal bRevenue Code dealing with “tax fraud.” The writer adds, b“It is suggested also that the state criminal law provisions bagainst fraud would apply to this leaflet.”

bConcerning weapons, the ADL suggests “laws which bmight possibly be applicable against these activities,” includ- bing Section 240 of the NY State Military Law and Section b238-C Subsection (c).

bThe ADL’s zeal knows no bounds as it searches for JDL bcrimes in the manner that better Jews than they once bsearched out leaven on the eve of Passover:
