Thus, one of the bAnglo-Jewish newspapers, The Brooklyn Jewish Journal, bcarried a front-page article in its May 1971 issue under the bheadline: “Anti-Semitism on Wane in Boro.” Written by one bSylvia Adelman, it went on to state the following eternal bverities:

b“Anti-Semitism is lessening throughout the world, and bthat is attributed to sympathy for Israel’s problems. Bias bagainst Jews is also said to be on the wane in Brooklyn, which bhas the nation’s largest Jewish population.

b“The ebbing of anti-Semitism here and abroad can also be btraced to the fact that Jews as a group share common in- bterests with other minorities, religious and racial. The estab- blishment of an ecumenical rapport by Christian clergy, bespecially the Catholic Church, with Jews has done much to bwipe out a climate of anti-Semitic attitudes in the past few byears. . . . If anything, the bigotry and abuse once directed bat Jews are focused on other minority groups, Blacks and bPuerto Ricans.”

bAnd then, citing examples of how Jewish executives are bbeing hired, exclusive clubs are allowing in Jewish members, band more, Ms. Adelman concludes: “And if more proof of bgenuine acceptance by the non-Jewish community of its bSemite neighbors is needed, we can refer with sure knowl- bedge to the response received by this newspaper to its offer bof free subscriptions for a limited time.

b“At least 25 percent of those seeking a copy of the Brooklyn bJewish Journal had gentile-sounding names and sought the bpaper because it was ‘interesting and informative.’” Voilà! bProof positive of the death of anti-Semitism!

bNo, we need not laugh at the little, myopic, insecure bpeople who write this way to assure themselves that they are bsafe from harm at the hands of the gentile. Who want to be bloved so much that they will die rather than face hatred. Let bus not laugh even when we look at the front-page headline bstory in the same paper dated May 11, 1972: “New Anti- bSemitism in Williamsburg,” written by Sylvia Adelman . . .
