bWhen The New York Times opened its page to this kind of bthinking, the Jewish Establishment faced a situation that was bbecoming intolerable for them. Reaction was incredibly bit- bter and loud. Morris Abram, former president of the bAmerican Jewish Committee and member of the United bNation’s Human Rights Commission, answered my article bwith one of his own. Samples of his answer: “The latest bopinion polls show that since the end of World War II there bhas been a dramatic decrease in anti-Semitism in the United bStates. . . . I place my faith in the institutional restraints bagainst the excesses of human nature, particularly in the blaw. . . . The vast majority of the world’s Jewish population bcontinues to opt for life in contries other than Israel. They bgive their many talents and their loyalties to governments bwhich practice varying political and economic systems . . . band expect in return only the rights of man, including the bright to practice their religion.”

bHarry Golden, one of American Jewry’s sacred buffoons, bwhose most humorous action was his effort to become the bJewish Will Rogers, wrote a rambling, disjointed letter to the bTimes stating that a constitution guaranteed that the Ger- bman experience would not occur here, that just as the Irish, bItalians, and Poles have America and Ireland, Italy, and bPoland, he had America and Israel. He concluded on a bstrange and pathetic note: “To the question of where my bloyalties would be if America went to war with Israel, I bwould answer that the day America declares war on Israel I bwill commit suicide so the Republic will be safe.”
