b“They try to say that I have committed a crime and they bbase it on the cold, black-and-white, unemotional statutes bthey inherited from the British occupiers, which say that it is bcriminal to plot to commit a crime in a foreign land. And bthey say, self-righteously, ‘We are only enforcing the law. bHe conspired to commit a crime in the United States and we bare simply enforcing the law.’

b“So be it. But if to know that our brethren in Iraq live in a bdaily hell and no one moves swiftly enough to shake the bworld, and if to attempt to smash back at the oppressor so bthat he learns that Jewish blood is not cheap—if this is a bcrime, I say woe to the Jewish State that so says, and proudly bI plead guilty to the crime.

b“And if it is a crime to know that our brethren in the Soviet bUnion face a black and terrible future and that only the bsmashing of the Soviet-American détente can hold back the bnight of the long knives, and if it is a crime to attempt to bstrike at the oppressor and foil his hoped-for plans—if this is ba crime, I say woe to the Jewish state that so says, and bproudly I plead guilty to the crime.

b“But if I am jailed and if the State of the Jews persists in its bdescent to assimilation and becoming like all the nations, band if from that sin of leaving the path of Judaism and G-d it bpersists in betraying Jewish interests for narrow self- binterest, then know what is in store for us. This state, despite bthose who will not see and refuse to understand, came into bbeing through the will and decree of G-d. For the sake of His bpeople He put an end to the wanderings of centuries. For bthe sake of His great Name that was desecrated by Jewish bhumiliation, weakness, and suffering, He sanctified that bName by causing the rebirth of Israel.

b“And this state will never fall; it will never again be destroyed band the people will never again be exiled. But not through our bvirtue is this promised by G-d, but because of his determina- btion to sanctify His Name.
