bdown of the barriers that, until now, mostly prevented intermar-
briage and assimilation. Without any kind of plan to prevent the
bArabs from politically taking over the Jewish state, the
bHellenists of Shutafut, through de-Zionization, work vigorously
bon programs that destroy the uniqueness and separateness of the
bJew. This must inevitably duplicate the intermarriage and as-
bsimilation that decimated Jews in Germany, from where the
bfounder of Shutafut stems.
bThe truth is that even without groups such as Shutafut,
bassimilation has begun to grow in Israel. Held back for decades
bby Arab-Israeli conflict, by strict geographical separation be-
btween Jews and Arabs, and by strong traditional as well as anti-
bArab feelings, it has begun to spread in recent years, those rea-
bsons having begun to weaken. Intermarriage and the breakdown
bof uniqueness have risen. This in itself makes the growing Arab
bpopulation a threat to the spiritual existence of ever-growing
bnumbers of Jews.
bBut the work of Shutafut and other groups of its kind will
bsurely escalate the process. Surely, the joint Jewish-Arab work-
bshops, summer camps, retreats, clubhouses, and visits to homes
bwill do precisely what such things did during the eternal Jewish
bstruggle for minority rights in every land of the Exile. Jewish
byoungsters with no Jewish education will see no differences be-
btween themselves and Arab youngsters. Friends will become lov-
bers. Jewish women will find coexistence with Arab men in
bbedroom retreats, and the already nonexistent intellectual rea-
bsons not to intermarry will be reinforced in the name of “broth-
berhood” and “goodwill.” Shutafut and other groups such as In-
bterns for Peace (an organization with much money and support
bfrom the U.S. Reform Jewish movement, the American Jewish
bCommittee, and other Establishment giants) all nourish the
bmyth of “head-and-stomach” coexistence as well as moving to-
bward the de-Zionizing of Israel. But most of all they are the
bprime drivers on the road to Jewish-Arab assimilation. For in-
btermarriage and assimilation cannot thrive through separation.
bThe first need is to break down barriers and to intermingle.
bThat is being done by Shutafut and Interns.
bThere are indeed many who see nothing wrong with this.
bThey are the masters of illogic who call for a “solution” to the
bJewish problem of assimilation in the Exile by struggling hero-
