Thailand: Buddhists versus Muslims

bOn September 22, 1977, two grenades exploded at a cere- bmony attended by the king and queen of Thailand and their two bdaughters in Yala province. The royal family was unharmed, band the government accused six Muslim secessionists of the at- btempted assassination.

bMuslims in the three southern provinces near Muslim bMalya, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat have fought for years for bthe secession of the provinces with their million Muslims. They bare led by the National Liberation Front of the Pattani Re- bpublic.

Burma: Buddhists versus Muslims

bNo fewer than 100,000 Muslim refugees fled into Bang- bladesh in the first half of 1978 from Burma, where they claimed bthe army “had waged a campaign of terror against the country’s bMuslim minority.” The exodus caused a serious rift between the btwo countries when the president of Bangladesh, Major General bZiaur Rahman, accused Burma of “an inhuman eviction of bMuslims.”

The “Overseas Chinese”: Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia

bThe “boat people” of Vietnam for the most part are not bVietnamese but Hoas—Vietnam-born ethnic Chinese—and the bChinese who live outside China proper, in every country in bSoutheast Asia, are a hated minority. For the most part this bstems from the fact that their diligence and hard work have en- babled them to control the commerce of the cities. Jealously is a bdeeply ingrained trait in man. When the object of this jealousy bis “different,” you have the makings of bloody communal con- bflict.

bAnd so between March and June 1978, 90,000 Chinese fled bVietnam after official harassment, prompted by a desire to b“Vietnamize” the economy. In China the refugees would face bdifficult conditions, at least among their own people. An b
