b(“eternal learner of Torah”) of the yeshiva, Simcha Yitzhak
bBroida, twenty-eight, of Vilkomir, Lithuania, is dangled head
bdown from the window and tortured to death. With him dies
bsixteen-year-old Brooklyn-born Chaim Krasner and a couple
bthat have come to Hebron for a Sabbath visit, Asher Moshe and
bChaya Gutman of Tel Aviv.
bThe Hebron yeshiva is looted and totally destroyed. All its
brecords are ripped to shreds and the furniture destroyed in an
borgy of madness. The home of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Epstein,
bis a major target of the murderers. They attack in a large force,
bthrowing huge stones through the windows. The families inside
bare gripped by terror. The men desperately try to hold the
bdoors against the mob, and the women cry out in panic.
bAcross the street stands the home of the governor of Hebron. The
bcries of anguish move him to come out onto the balcony and
border the police, who have been standing by the whole time, to
bchase the mob away. The mob is not impressed. Three times
bthey return, and three times the governor calmly orders them to
bbe dispersed. It is easily done, but not before sixty-eight-year-
bold Elimelech Zev Lichtenstein is murdered. The day before,
bwhen the first victim of the Arabs was killed in the yeshiva,
bLichtenstein was in a side room. Today he has just been called
bup to the Torah, where he gave the traditional blessing of
bthanks, Hagomel, for having been saved. Now, fifteen minutes
blater, he is dead.
bThe day of horrors nears its end. Outside the small hotel,
baccording to The Book of Hebron (edited by Oded Avisar, 1970),
bEishel Avraham, Sheikh Talib, the Muslim religious leader of
bthe town, walks up to the building in which dozens of Jews sit
bhuddled in terror. He looks inside to see how many people he
bcan count, then leaves. Some moments pass, and suddenly the
bsound of a large mob is heard. The Jews look out the windows
bto see hundreds of Arabs following the Sheikh. They stand
baround him, now, as he speaks to them: “You, Muslims! Inside
